§ 6-1. Fire department.

  • (a)

    Composition. The fire department shall consist of the chief of the fire department and such personnel as may be necessary to perform its duties.

    (b)

    Fire chief.

    (1)

    Appointment of fire chief. The fire chief shall be appointed by the city manager with approval of the city council. He shall work under the direction of the city manager and shall supervise the full-time firemen and all volunteer firemen.

    (2)

    Powers and duties generally. The fire chief shall have general supervision and control of the fire department. He shall have the power to suspend or discharge any full-time paid employee of the fire department. He will select or discharge volunteer firemen upon the recommendations of a committee appointed by the volunteer members of the fire department.

    (3)

    Authority to recommend supervisory personnel. The fire chief shall have the authority to recommend such other supervisory personnel as needed, subject to the approval of the city manager.
